Clay Projects

Cultures around the world use masks for a variety of purposes. Students choose a culture, researched, and sculpted using many cultures styles. Italian, African, Mexican, German, and Native American are just a few of the cultures that students studied.

They also learned coil building pottery, which they found was more difficult than it seemed.

Artist of February

Michelle!

from the 1st day of class I could tell that Michelle was a very talented artist. Each student made their own name tag and her's just popped out from all the others. Instead of just using letters, objects spelt out her name. Check out her surreal artwork below and how the hands are making breakfast to form a landscape.

Surreal Hands

Hands, you've all seen them in many types of artwork from cavemen to modern art. We started off by drawing hands uninstructed, with no tips from me.  Then students learned a technique called blind contour (drawing with only looking at your hand and not your paper!). Many improvements we already starting to take place as we moved onto a 2nd technique that artists like Michelango and Di Vinci used to improve their drawing skills, dissection!!  Only we used the internet instead of dissecting an actual human hand. Below you can see their improvements!

After we improved our hand drawing skills we learned about one of my favorite Spanish artists, Salvador Dali. Dali was best know for his surreal artwork, bizarre character, and crazy moustache. We created videos judging his "Persistence of Memory" painting--->

Student took their techniques learned along with their knowledge of surreal art to create their own surreal hands.

Artist of January!

Jardyn!!!!

Jardyn also has many artists in his family. Last semster I always found him sitting there in silence and what seemed to be deep thought......

....this semster he seemed to be a new person stepping into the room with so much energy and humor. In his german expressionist influenced print you can really get a sense his character. I believe he was the only student that choose a humorous unstead of depressing event, the search for Bigfoot.

German Expressionist Printmaking

We started out the 2nd semster studing work from the German Expressionists. They lived during the time of WW2 and were declared emenies of the state by Hitler. Most of their art was destroyed and many weren't even allowed to have paint supplies in their possession.

Students also thought about current events that effect their lifes and then transfomed them into the German Expressionist style.

Artist of December!!

TORI!!!!!

She was very surprised to discover she was artist of December. Probably because she always seems to get upset with whatever new art material she is working with. Tori says it actually never works the way she wants it to. Photography is the art form that Tori most enjoys, but I believe through the struggle of each new art media she discovers what first may have seemed impossible is not.
